Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is my child ready for travel soccer?
A: If you are considering travel soccer, ask yourself the following questions:
- Has your child played a minimum of two years of recreational soccer with RSU5-RCE or another town’s equivalent program?
- Are you and your child committed to two practices a week and games on Sundays (including travel)?
- Does your child have a basic understanding of the rules of soccer?
Q: How far will I have to travel for away games?
A: Many games are played against clubs within 30 minutes of Freeport, however some games may be played in the Augusta and Waterville area. Some teams have played games as far away as Farmington or Bangor/Brewer.
Q: If there are two teams in my child’s age group, can I choose on which team he or she plays?
A: The FUSC board and coaches will divide players into their teams, not the parents.
Q: What equipment does my child need?
A: Each player should have shin guards, cleats, soccer ball and water for all practices and games. Mouth guards are not required, but are encouraged.
Q: What are friendly games?
A: Friendly games are additional games, added at the coach’s discretion in order to get players more playing time. Friendly games may be on Saturdays or Sundays.
Q: What does “results oriented” and “non-results oriented” mean?
A: “Results oriented” means that Soccer Maine is keeping track of scores and standings of all U-12, U-13 and U-14 teams. This information will be used to determine playoff brackets at the end of the season. “Non-results oriented” means that Soccer Maine is not keeping track of wins and losses for each U-9, U-10 and U-11 team, and a festival of games will be played at the season rather than playoffs. Games are still competitive and games will either be won or lost.
Q: If there are two teams for an age group, will the teams be balanced or will there be an “A” team and a “B” team?
A: For age groups U-9, U-10 and U-11, we will try to have balanced teams based on the evaluations that take place in early May. For age groups U-12, U-13 and U-14 we will have A teams and B teams also based on the evaluations that take place in early May.
Q: When does registration take place?
A: Mandatory evaluations take place in early May and registration invites follow shortly after.
Q: When and where are practices?
A: Practices will take place at a time determined by the coach for that particular age group. Practices will typically take place at the Hunter Road fields in Freeport.
Q: Are there opportunities for my child to participate in events with Freeport United outside of the normal Fall/Spring Soccer Maine seasons?
A: Participation in any games or tournaments attended by a Freeport United team outside of regularly scheduled league games and end of season tournaments are at the sole discretion of the individual coaches. Players invited to play are at the coaches discretion and additional fees will be incurred only by players invited to attend.
